Land Area and Political Subdivision
Mati City is a city in the province of Davao Oriental. It is the capital of the said province. On June 20, 2007, the Commission on Elections officially proclaimed the ratification of Republic Act 9408 converting the Municipality of Mati into a component city to be known as City of Mati. Mati is politically subdivided into 26 barangays.
Mati City is located on the eastern part of the island of Mindanao. It is one hundred sixty-five (165) kilometers away from Davao City, a one and a half hours drive from Tagum City. Visitors can travel from Davao City through the Madaum Diversion Road, which is shorter than taking the Davao-Tagum highway. Travels by air and sea are possible, with the existence of an airport and seaport.
Geography and Climate
Mati has a total land area of 79,109 hectares (or 68,200 hectares?), 33% of which has a slope ranging from 0-18% (plain to rolling). The rest are either hilly, steeply hilly and mountainous. It is bounded on the east by the Pacific Ocean and on the south by Pujada Bay. It has Type II climate which is characterized by no dry season with a very pronounced rainfall that occurs from December to January.
